America Does Not Need Gun Control Essay -- argumentative, persuasive,
Gun control is often considered as an effective means of protecting ordinary citizens. We all want to feel safe, and it's easy to ascribe notions of safety to the idea of gun control. Unfortunately, feeling safe and actually being safe can be very different things. Gun control sounds wonderful in theory: no guns means no shootings. If only it were that simple. When one considers some of the worst shootings and gun-related crimes in recent history, it's peculiar to realize how often these occurred in places where guns were illegal to carry or even own. It's downright disturbing to realize that, in some cases, the only armed person in sight was the one planning a crime. A sign that says 'no guns' might as well say 'no resistance'. What safer environment could existââ¬âfor a criminal? It is my intention, throughout this paper, to discuss the disadvantages and incongruities of gun control policies, and to highlight and provide argument for the positive benefits of gun ownersh ip. The major problem with gun control laws is that it is likely only the law-abiding will obey them. In the midst of planning or perpetrating a crime, is it plausible that criminals stop and wonder whether their firearm is duly registered with the state, or even legal in their local ordinance? Seems kind of silly. In the meantime, some conscientious citizens have turned in their firearms while others no longer carry them out of the house, or carry their handguns about in a locked case in their car (where they are about as useful a means for defense as butter for cutting granite). Clearly, the law is only a restriction upon those who obey it. Another problem is deciding whether or not gun control laws are even, well, lawful. This is not as cut and dried ... ...it is up to individuals to decide whether or not owning a gun for self-defense is the right choice in their life. It is a responsibility, and not to be taken lightly. All persons must decide this on their own, but no one should be able decide that it is the wrong choice for everybody else. Tlc Analysis of a Drug Component
To: Wesley Clark From: Lizzie Heath Date: March 4, 2013 Subject: Thin-Layer Chromatographic Analysis of Drug Components (Experiment #15) The purpose of this experiment is to determine the components of an unknown drug and identify it as one of six (6) commercial drugs by using thin-layer chromatography. I added approximately a quarter of a tablet of acetaminophen, aspirin, caffeine, ibuprofen, salicylamide, and the unknown (#19) to separate test tubes containing 2. 5mL of dichloromethane. I noticed that my unknown was a coated tablet. Each test tube was swirled until the greatest amount of each solid was dissolved. Each solution was spotted along a labeled starting line on the silica gel TLC plate. The TLC plate was put into a developing chamber containing 200:1 acetic acid and allowed to developed until the solvent reached almost to the top of the TLC plate, which took about 10 minutes. When the TLC plate finished developing, I observed the plate under UV light and noticed that the s alicylamide was the only spot that fluoresced purple while all the other spots fluoresced blue and I also noticed that the unknown had 2 spots.I traced around the spots for each solution on the TLC plate, the only spot that I did not see was the one for the ibuprofen. I then placed it into an iodine chamber and noticed that the acetaminophen turned a yellowish color. I measured that the solvent traveled 64mm up the TLC plate by using the starting line as a reference, and, by using that information, I was able to calculate the Rf value of each solution by using: Rf= distance traveled by the spotDistance traveled by the solvent I used that formula to get the following information for the table below: Commercial DrugRf Value Acetaminophen0. 500 Aspirin0. 781 Caffeine0. 125 Ibuprofen0 Salicylamide0. 719 Unknown0. 109 & 0. 734 I am able to determine that my unknown substance contains aspirin, but I am not sure what the other substance is. I can speculate that the other substance is the c oating from the tablet of the unknown.

Free Essays on Reality According to James, pragmatic reality seems to be an individualââ¬â¢s construction of ideas and is based upon the fulfillment of oneââ¬â¢s own interests. First of all, James believes that there is a number of different ââ¬Å"worldsâ⬠or realities that exist such as the world of science, the world of abstract truths, etc.. Of these worlds that James thinks exists, he feels that the world of physical objects is the most important world when considering reality. He considers this world to be most important because physical objects have more impact on our lives and most affect our ability to fulfill our ends. So, when we discuss James and his ideas on a pragmatic reality, we are focusing on the reality of physical objects. Jamesââ¬â¢ ideas on pragmatic reality also seem to take into account two major sides. Side one would include an individualââ¬â¢s interests, values, and concerns, and side two would include an individualââ¬â¢s experiences. James thinks that an individual creates his own reality by sorting through his interests, values, and concerns and then relating his experiences to those factors in a way that will be satisfying to him. This process will result in an individuals own reality, and not any ââ¬Å"absoluteâ⬠reality. What is real needs to be understood, and if one can not understand something, then it is not reality to that person. Therefore, each individualââ¬â¢s perception of physical objects will result in an individual sense of reality for each individual based on the perception of the same group of physical objects. Jamesââ¬â¢ metaphysical conception of reality is based on the idea that there are many ways that one can view something, and once again it is up to the individual to decide which way the thing will be perceived. The idea here is not to argue about which point of view is the correct one, but it is to see which point of view is more appropriate given the purposes the individual has. Many examples are given ...

WSJ and NPR Miss the Mark on Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)
WSJ and NPR Miss the Mark on Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) Resume Oblivion has been a hot topic in the news. The Wall Street Journal published an article, Your Resume vs. Oblivion, reporting that the percentage of large companies using computerized Applicant Tracking Systems to screen candidates is in the high 90%; almost all Fortune 500 companies rely on these programs. The article points out that the systems, which can cost from $5,000 to millions of dollars, are efficient, but not foolproof.à Specifically, Tracking software à may miss the most-qualified applicant if that person doesnt game the system by larding [sic I think they mean loading] his or her rà ©sumà © with keywords from the job description. The article offers advice, which I recommend reading, on How to Beat the Black Hole.' However, the advice is not comprehensive.à The first item, for instance, instructs job seekers to mimic the keywords in the job description as closely as possible. If youre applying to be a sales manager, make sure your rà ©sumà © includes the words sales and manage (assuming youve done both!). Pardon me for saying so, but the above advice is 1) rudimentary, 2) a no-brainer and 3) limited in its value. The problem is that 99% of the people applying for a sales manager job are going to have the words sales and manageà in their resumes! Therefore, you will not get higher on any list by including these keywords. The same goes for most of the keywords in the job description, since many job seekers are getting savvy about matching their resumes to the posting. The Wall Street Journal is not the only major news provider who delivered misleading or incomplete information on this topic. Take NPRs 16-minute segment entitled Keeping Your Resume Out of Online Oblivion, where callers related stories of how they got interviews despite the reign of Applicant Tracking Systems.à View it here: You will hear some creative solutions in this spot on how to make it past the computers. You will also hear something misleading:à that hiring managers (i.e., human beings) program the ATS software to screen for certain terms. Do you really think that a company like Google or Starbucks is going to have a human being sit there and punch keywords into a computer for each of the thousands of jobs they post every day? Think again. No, human beings do not program these systems the systems program themselves! The keywords the computers are looking for are determined by the computers. And this is why qualified candidates are so often overlooked.

Explore Canadian cultural developments and further examine those which would impact the investment plans of a German-based luxury car manufacturer - Essay Example However, the countryââ¬â¢s recent economic prosperity and the ability to be at par with the competitive world are some affirmations of this conservatism. According to Bill Currie, Deloitteââ¬â¢s chair, the Canadians feel they are good and do not need to take risks that are not comfortable with them. In a report produced by Deloitte Company, uncertainty and risk were noted as the greatest obstacles to the Canadian business owners. In addition, other Canadian business leaders claim that the high cost of labour is the primary cause that is restraining their capabilities to invest in research and development (OVSEY, 2012). According to OVSEY (2012), Prof Peridis disagrees with their claims noting that the Germans despite their high labour costs can still sell their products. They produce knowledge-intensive products and adds that a culture of modesty cannot be changed overnight. Thus, for Canada to become a serious contributor to the business globe, it needs time to change that conservative culture. Audi is among the top luxury car producing company in Germany. The Audi manufacturers are known for their numerous innovations in the automotive industry. For this reason, Audi can be termed as a risk taker in the global business world due to their willingness to venture their business worldwide. Furthermore, plans to invest globally in the Chinese and American markets are underway by the Audi automobile company. These plans were triggered by the developments in both countries and the need to sell their products worldwide to develop economically (BOUDETTE, 2014). Despite the facts that Canadian companies are conservative and do not love innovation, the Canadian country can be a good market for the Audi to sell their cars. As well, this is because the locally based companies are very reluctant in innovating anything new. As a result, Canadians may be willing to break the monotony in their countries and try to import
